More About the Program
Huron Station Playhouse’s “Summer PlayLab” is a five-week intensive program designed for current High School students interested in theater performance and playwriting.
The program consists of two tracks designed to mirror the process of new play development. Students choose to apply for either the acting or playwriting track to focus on their given discipline while collaborating in a professional-style creative environment.
Over the course of the program, playwriting students develop original 10-minute plays while acting students receive scene-study performance training. As the program progresses, our actors and playwrights will come together to rehearse and develop these new works, culminating in a public showcase where our acting students will present playwrights’ original 10-minute plays.
Choosing Your track:
Students in the Summer PlayLab Program have the option to apply for and participate in either our Playwriting Track or Acting Track. In depth descriptions of each track are below.
Each week, the full cohort participates in a joint class that explores the broader world of theater through script readings, guest speakers, and discussions about the artistic and practical aspects of producing live performance.
Acting Track
Students in the Acting Track train in core performance techniques, scene study, and professional rehearsal practices within a focused, ensemble-based environment. The program begins with work on established texts to build a strong technical foundation, then transitions into the development of new work as students are cast in original plays written by their peers in the Playwriting Track. From first read-through to final performance, actors collaborate closely with writers and directors, rehearsing and refining these 10-minute plays in preparation for a public showcase. Along the way, students gain hands-on experience in the full creative process, deepening both their craft and their ability to work as part of a professional-style company.
Playwriting Track
Students in the Playwriting Track develop original 10-minute plays through a structured process of drafting, feedback, and revision. Writers learn how to generate and pitch ideas, engage in thoughtful critique sessions, and hear their work aloud through table reads. Along the way, they are introduced to key elements of dramatic structure, character development, and dialogue, strengthening both their creative voice and technical craft. As the program progresses, playwrights collaborate closely with actors and directors, refining their scripts in rehearsal and adapting to discoveries that emerge in the room. The experience culminates in a public showcase, where students see their work fully realized onstage and gain firsthand insight into the journey from page to production.
Beyond the program:
Students who participate in the Summer PlayLab will be introduced to the mission and work of Huron Station Playhouse, a new theater space on the east side of Los Angeles.
Founded by actor and artistic director Alden Ehrenreich (Weapons, Oppenheimer, Solo: A Star Wars Story), Huron Station Playhouse strives to champion the irreplaceable power of live theater in a digital age by elevating exceptional acting and the craft of storytelling. Through contemporary productions, nurturing new voices, and expanding access through education and community programs, we cultivate human connection, uplift artistic excellence, and revitalize regional theater by empowering the next generation of artists.
Summer PlayLab students will have opportunities to work closely with and recieve feedback from the Huron Station Playhouse Team. They will also be invited to attend productions during the theater’s upcoming season in Fall 2026.
